17-Year-Old Mathis Albert Becomes Youngest Scorer in USMNT History as USA Rallies Past Chile 4-2

The United States men’s national team fought back from a second-half deficit to beat Chile 4-2 in an international friendly at Energizer Park in St. Louis on Tuesday night, with 17-year-old Mathis Albert writing his name into the record books as the youngest scorer in USMNT history, according to USA Today.

Chile struck first after the break. Maximiliano Gutiérrez finished a well-struck shot inside the far post three minutes into the second half to put the visitors 2-1 up, after Diego Ulloa had cancelled out Sebastian Berhalter’s 37th-minute opener just before half-time.

The Americans responded immediately. Julian Hall rose to meet Giovanni Reyna’s cross in the 51st minute and headed home the equaliser — his second goal in as many senior appearances, making him the youngest US player to score in back-to-back matches and the 13th in programme history to score in each of his first two caps.

Substitute Chris Richards then put the hosts ahead in the 72nd minute with a powerful header from Berhalter’s corner, before Albert sealed the win in stoppage time, converting from close range off the underside of the bar at 17 years, 4 months and 8 days old.

The victory was the second straight for Mauricio Pochettino’s young side, which opened the four-game window with a 4-1 win over Peru on Saturday. Next up is a match against Mexico on October 3 in Arizona.
