Hegseth to Unveil 20% Cut in Senior Military Ranks at Quantico ‘State of the Force’ Address

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will announce plans to cut the number of positions reserved for generals and admirals by 20 per cent in a “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia on Wednesday, according to Pentagon officials.

The reduction would double the 10 per cent cut to general and flag officer positions that the Pentagon ordered last spring, and the military services have been instructed to complete the changes by Jan. 1, 2027, according to USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. Some positions will be downgraded rather than eliminated, the Washington Examiner reported.

Hegseth has branded the effort “less generals, more GIs,” framing it as a shift of resources from headquarters to troops. “This is not a slash-and-burn exercise meant to punish high-ranking officers,” he said in a May 2025 video, calling the reductions “prudent.”

The move follows last year’s directive cutting active-duty four-star posts by at least 20 per cent. As of September 30, 2023, the military had 809 active-duty generals and flag officers, according to the Congressional Research Service — 48 fewer than the maximum authorised by law.

The address comes exactly a year after Hegseth summoned some 800 generals and admirals to Quantico for a speech declaring an end to “woke” culture in the military, alongside sweeping fitness and grooming changes.

Wednesday’s speech is expected to lay out his priorities for the Pentagon in the year ahead, with the senior-rank reductions among the centrepiece announcements, according to the Associated Press.
