Gill Smashes Fastest ODI Double Century as India Chase 406 to Seal Series

India captain Shubman Gill produced the fastest double century in one-day international history on Wednesday, smashing an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls as India chased down 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI in Guwahati and seal the three-match series.

According to Reuters, Gill reached his double hundred in just 117 deliveries, breaking Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls. He also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score more than one ODI double century, and the first captain to register double hundreds in both Tests and ODIs.

The 255-run opening stand with Sharma, who scored 101 off 75 balls and crossed 12,000 ODI runs, set the tone for India’s highest-ever successful chase. West Indies had earlier posted their maiden 400-plus ODI total of 405 for 7, powered by centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo — only the sixth time three batters have scored hundreds in one ODI innings.

India reached 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs with 39 balls to spare, completing the second-highest successful chase in men’s ODI history, behind South Africa’s famous 435 against Australia in 2006. Virat Kohli fell for 29 before Ruturaj Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 31.

The result gave India an unassailable 2-0 series lead, while Gill’s 223 also stands as the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup.
