White House Creates ‘Super Intelligence Force’ AI Task Force, Report Due in 120 Days
The White House has created a new task force to examine the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence and decide what role the federal government should play in overseeing the fast-moving technology, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing the group’s head.
The panel, called the “Super Intelligence Force” — adopting President Donald Trump’s preferred name for AI — will be led by Jay Clayton, who heads the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. A senior White House official told the paper the role effectively makes Clayton Trump’s AI czar.
The task force has 120 days to prepare a report on AI’s risks and opportunities and on what responsibility the federal government should have over the technology. “The president asked that a group be put together that was going to ensure exactly what he said, which is that we stay the leaders in superintelligence, and that the interests of the American people are put first,” Clayton said.
“The risk of not being first is high,” he added. “Not being first increases the identified, and unidentified, risks, particularly from our adversaries.”
The formation follows a White House meeting on Tuesday with AI industry leaders, including OpenAI president Greg Brockman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, at which firms agreed to voluntary principles such as internal controls for monitoring model development and external reviews by third parties.
The task force will still defer to industry as the primary vehicle for managing AI risks, according to the report, but will work alongside companies to identify risks and opportunities.
