Debris Found Off Nantucket as Coast Guard Searches for Missing Medical Jet Carrying Six
Wreckage from a medical transport jet that vanished off the Massachusetts coast early on Saturday has been discovered floating in the Atlantic, the United States Coast Guard has confirmed.
The Gulfstream G100 twinjet, operated by the Canada-based Latitude Air Ambulance, was carrying six people from Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport to Boston Logan when it disappeared shortly before its scheduled 1.25am landing, according to the Coast Guard.
Flight-tracking data reported by CNN showed the aircraft plunging from about 24,000 feet to roughly 11,000 feet within minutes. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a search-and-rescue alert at around 1.20am, and the Coast Guard began an air-and-surface search of the waters about 13 nautical miles south of Nantucket, deploying cutters, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
Four of those aboard were crew members — two pilots and two medical staff, all Canadians — who had flown to Bermuda to collect a patient and a relative, the company’s director of flight operations, Clarence Togeretz, told CNN’s newsgathering partner CBC. The company lost contact with the aircraft at about 1.30am and alerted the Coast Guard after it failed to land on schedule.
Crews from the Coast Guard cutter William Sparling located floating debris and were examining the wreckage to identify parts of the aircraft, a Coast Guard spokesperson told the New York Post. A press conference at Coast Guard Base Boston was expected on Sunday morning. No identities or casualty details have been released.
