Natalia Silva Wins Vacant UFC Flyweight Title Over Wang Cong at UFC 332

Brazil’s Natalia Silva is the UFC’s new women’s flyweight champion after defeating China’s Wang Cong by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 332 on Saturday night, according to USA Today.

The judges at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City scored the five-round contest 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46 for Silva, who never looked in serious danger after dropping Cong with a head kick in the second round. Cong rallied with more competitive rounds in the third and fourth, and landed her hardest shots of the night in the fifth, but it was not enough to close the gap.

The belt had stood vacant since Valentina Shevchenko — the only other woman ever to hold the flyweight crown — gave up the title after a back and shoulder injury expected to keep her out for at least a year, according to MMA Junkie.

The win capped a remarkable rise for the 29-year-old Silva, who has now won 15 fights in a row. She earned her shot by beating three former champions in succession — Jessica Andrade, Alexa Grasso and Rose Namajunas — and improved her record to 21-5-1 (9-0 UFC). Cong, 34, saw a four-fight winning streak end and fell to 10-2 (5-2 UFC).

The promotion has indicated former champion Alexa Grasso would be next for the new titleholder.
