Putin Warns West Against Escalation Over Kaliningrad, Puts ‘All Weapons’ on the Table

President Vladimir Putin warned Western governments on Thursday not to escalate their standoff with Moscow over the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, saying the world was living through a dangerous moment and that Russia would put its entire arsenal on the table if the territory were attacked.

“If it comes to a direct attack on the Russian Federation – in this case, we are referring to Kaliningrad, and perhaps other territories as well – the question of the Russian Federation deploying all the weapons at our country’s disposal will, of course, inevitably and immediately be on the agenda,” Putin told the Valdai Forum of Russia experts in Moscow, according to Reuters. “This is inevitable.”

Putin said Russia had no plans to attack any European country and wanted to coexist peacefully. He added, according to AFP: “We have no intention of attacking anyone – neither in 2029, nor in 2030, nor in 2050.”

Facing what he described as an enemy “twice our size” in NATO, Putin said Russia would rely on its “competitive advantages,” noting that while France and Britain are nuclear powers, “no one else possesses the kind of weapons that Russia has today.”

The remarks followed a Russian diplomatic note to NATO this week warning Moscow would resort to nuclear weapons if the alliance tried to isolate Kaliningrad, which lies between Poland and Lithuania. NATO denounced the threat as “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” according to Reuters.

The Times reported that the Valdai event was moved from the Black Sea city of Sochi over security concerns, and that Russian drones struck a bridge, a school and the grounds of a nuclear research institute in Kyiv on Thursday. Schoolchildren were in a bomb shelter, no injuries were reported, and officials said a reactor at the institute was undamaged.
