Suicide bombing at police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan kills at least 11
A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a roadside police checkpoint in Pakistan’s Dera Ismail Khan district on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and wounding about 30 others, according to police and emergency officials.
The attack hit the Aman Mela checkpoint near Darazinda in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service. Local police chief Safdar Baloch said most of the dead and injured were security personnel, including police, customs and forest department officers, along with some civilians.
According to the Associated Press, the powerful blast destroyed the sprawling checkpoint, and gunfire was reported after the explosion. Emergency teams rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals, where several were reported to be in critical condition.
The Pakistani Taliban, known as the TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, the AP reported. The group, separate from but allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers, has claimed much of the recent surge in militant violence across Pakistan.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and offered condolences to the victims’ families, according to the AP.
