Trump Says He Expects More Iran Talks This Week After Rejecting Ceasefire Proposal
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he expects US negotiators to hold further talks with Iran this week, a day after rejecting Tehran’s proposal for a ceasefire and a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios.
In a phone interview published on Sunday, Trump said Iran wants an agreement but that the terms Tehran has offered fall short of what Washington demands. “They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make,” he told the outlet. “They overplayed their hand.”
The remarks followed indirect exchanges on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner through intermediaries. Tehran had offered to reopen the strategic waterway within a week and resume nuclear negotiations in return for the lifting of the US naval blockade, easing sanctions on Iranian oil sales and restoring a regional ceasefire. Trump rejected the package on Saturday, calling it unacceptable.
Araghchi said on Sunday that Tehran was still waiting for the “definitive” US response through mediators before deciding its next move.
Trump kept the option of renewed military strikes on the table while insisting diplomacy would continue. The United States and Iran have been at war for seven months since large-scale American and Israeli strikes in late February.
