Trump–Xi Summit at White House Ends With Extended Trade Truce but Few Breakthroughs

United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have concluded a three-day official state visit to Washington that delivered pageantry and a short extension of the two countries’ trade truce, but no major breakthroughs on the hardest disputes.

Xi departed on Friday, September 25, after tea at the White House and a tour of the National Archives, where the two leaders viewed the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, according to the Associated Press. The visit was Xi’s first to Washington since 2015; it opened on Thursday with a formal arrival ceremony on the South Lawn featuring 479 military personnel and the national anthems of both countries, the White House said.

The leaders discussed trade, artificial intelligence, technology and Taiwan in roughly 90 minutes of closed-door talks, followed by a state dinner attended by American technology executives. The most concrete result was a two-month extension of the US–China trade truce, pushing its expiry from November 10 to January 10, 2027, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

A White House fact sheet said both sides had operationalised new US–China boards of trade and investment, welcomed Chinese steps on fentanyl precursor controls, and confirmed that two giant pandas leased by China would arrive at Zoo Atlanta within days.

Trump called the meeting “very productive” on Truth Social, while analysts said artificial intelligence, Taiwan and regional security remained without clear resolution.
