Rays’ Contact Hitting and Four Yankees Errors Add Up to a 5-2 Game 2 Win and a 2-0 ALDS Lead

The New York Yankees are one loss from elimination, and on Monday night it was their own gloves that put them there. The Yankees committed four errors and lost 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the American League Division Series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, according to USA Today. The Rays lead the best-of-five series 2-0 and need one more win to reach the American League Championship Series.

Three of the errors came on the first four batters that Cam Schlittler, the Yankees’ presumptive American League Cy Young Award winner, faced, according to theScore. Third baseman Ryan McMahon booted a Yandy Díaz grounder for the first. Junior Caminero then hit a dribbler that George Lombard Jr. flipped to second for a force, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. overthrew first base trying to turn the double play, and catcher Austin Wells was later called for catcher’s interference after a Rays challenge. Four batters, three errors, one run.

Lombard added the fourth error in the fifth inning, the frame that broke the game open, according to NBC Sports. Jonathan Aranda singled to start the inning, Caminero ripped a double to right-centre, and Liam Hicks’s slow bouncer to second scored Aranda for a 2-1 lead. Chandler Simpson then brought Caminero home, and Richie Palacios smacked a two-run single to centre off reliever Brent Headrick to stretch the advantage to 5-1. Three of the Rays’ five runs were unearned.

Schlittler, the league’s most dominant pitcher this season, lasted just 4 1/3 innings — the shortest postseason start of his career, according to USA Today. He allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. “I’m not disappointed in the defense. I’m not disappointed in the offense,” Schlittler said afterward, according to SNY. “I’m disappointed in myself.”

New York’s offence, missing three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge because of a strained calf, offered almost nothing. Ben Rice supplied both Yankees runs with solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings, according to USA Today. The Yankees have scored two runs on five hits across the first two games of the series. “Just battle,” Rays speedster Chandler Simpson said of the approach against Schlittler, according to MLB.com. “Put the ball in play as best as possible.”

Tampa Bay’s bullpen protected the lead from there. Freddy Peralta retired the first nine Yankees he faced and allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings, and Cam Booser, Ian Seymour and Bryan Baker held New York to four hits to close it out, according to theScore. Booser earned the win and Baker the save.

The defeat mirrored Game 1, which the Rays took 1-0 on Saturday behind Aranda’s home run. Tampa Bay entered the postseason as the American League’s top seed after a 98-64 regular season. Game 3 is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, where the Rays will have a chance to clinch a return to the ALCS for the first time since 2020.

Why It Matters

This series is becoming a referendum on two opposing baseball philosophies — and so far the underdog one is winning. The Rays had the lowest strikeout rate (18.8 percent) and the lowest swing-and-miss rate (20.7 percent) in Major League Baseball during the regular season, according to the New York Post. Nobody in the sport puts the ball in play more consistently. Against a pitcher like Schlittler, whose fastball is nearly unhittable in the strike zone, that contact-first approach became a weapon: Tampa Bay simply refused to chase, forced the ball into play, and let New York’s defence do the damage.

That is the cruel part for the Yankees. The defence had been spotless all October — zero errors in their first three playoff games — until Monday night, when it unravelled in the exact pattern of their most painful recent defeat: the 2024 World Series Game 5 collapse against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when two errors and a catcher’s interference buried a 5-0 lead. Wells was behind the plate that night too. Some franchises collect October scars; the Yankees keep reopening the same one.

The stakes are existential now. Only 10 clubs in history have come back from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five series, according to theScore. The Yankees were the last to do it, in the 2017 ALDS — which at least gives the home crowd a precedent to cling to when the series shifts to the Bronx on Wednesday. But they will have to do it without Judge’s bat, with a bullpen that has been worked hard, and with a clubhouse that knows exactly how this script has ended before.

What to watch next: whether the change of scenery — and the return to grass from Tropicana Field’s skiddy turf infield — steadies New York’s defence; whether Boone shuffles his infield alignment after the double-play disaster; and whether the Rays’ contact approach can neutralise the Yankees’ rotation a third time. One more Rays win, and the league’s top seed is in the ALCS for the first time in six years.
