US Afghanistan War Commission Meets Field Marshal Munir at GHQ Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: A delegation of the United States Afghanistan War Commission called on Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Monday, September 28, the military’s media wing said.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the delegation was led by the commission’s co-chairs, Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr Colin F. Jackson, and is reviewing the United States’ 20-year engagement in Afghanistan. The meeting covered Pakistan’s support during the conflict, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan, with a focus on perspectives relevant to the commission’s work.

Field Marshal Munir shared Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the conflict and highlighted the challenges the country faced during the prolonged war, the ISPR said. He underscored the importance of incorporating the regional perspective and Pakistan’s experience while assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the conflict.

The delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the Afghanistan conflict and appreciated its continued contribution to regional peace and stability, according to the ISPR statement.

The commission is a bipartisan congressional body tasked with examining Washington’s military operations, intelligence activities, diplomatic engagement and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021.
